In the spotlight

Samantha Utpadel of Litchfield Park remembers her daughters auditioning during 2008 for the school edition of “Les Miserables” being performed by Spotlight Youth Theatre in Glendale. Both Alexandra (Ixy), now a junior music major at Willamette University in Oregon, and Sophia (Sophie), now a soon-to-be senior at Arizona School for the Arts, were cast.

Utpadel says “the show turned out to be a very special experience in many ways.” She’d started her own college studies as a theatrical design major, and helping out with costumes, hair and make-up — plus serving as spot operator for most of the run — helped Utpadel return to her roots.

Husband, wife team up for Spotlight’s ‘Seussical Jr.’

Mark 4man and his wife, Lynzee, are teaming up to co-direct Spotlight Youth Theatre’s production of “Seussical Jr.”

4man has been a musical director for many shows around the Valley, while Lynzee choreographs and performs at various theaters. But it’s the couple’s first joint venture as co-directors of “Seussical,” which opens Friday and is based on many of Dr. Seuss’ characters.

Don’t expect a traditional rendition of the 2000 Broadway musical. Many of this production’s inspirations are from the movie “Tron” and “The World of Color,” a nighttime attraction at Disneyland’s California Adventure.

“We wanted to do something different that’s very imagination-friendly,” 4man said.

Youth theater nails down Neil Simon comedy

“Fools” allegedly was written by Simon as a result of an agreement with his wife during their divorce proceedings. She was promised the profits of his next play, so he attempted to write something that would never last on Broadway.

The show is modeled after a real village in Poland that is considered the stupidest place on Earth.

Simon succeeded. The show debuted on Broadway in 1981 and lasted for 41 performances.

Though it’s considered a critical flop, “Fools” has continued to be a mainstay at local and professional theaters.

“There is a moral to the story, and the jokes are rapid fire,” Grossman said.

Spotlight Youth Theatre will be showing "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" through the month of December. The show is about the Herdman family, and when they show up with their children for the church Christmas pageant tryouts, everyone is in shock and dismay. Everyone is dismayed because the Herdman children are awful, and they bully and terrorize the kids in the neighborhood. All the children feel the safest when in church, and when the Herdmans show up, the entire congregation is running or cover.

‘Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ delivers holiday cheer at Spotlight

Years ago, Spotlight Youth Theatre Artistic Director Kenny Grossman performed in the play “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”

This season, Grossman decided to bring the classic family comedy to the youth troupe’s stage.

“The story really has so much heart and includes a wonderful message about the meaning of Christmas and the holidays,” Grossman said.

Based on the popular children’s book, the comedy revolves around the delinquent Herdman children who go to church for the first time. Despite the protests from the church, the kids are offered roles in the annual pageant.

And the children tell the Christmas story in an unconventional fashion.
